TALKING GOLD

Just how much gold has been mined since records have been kept, or guesses made? According to Compressed Air Magazine around 89,000 tons.  And where is this gold? Well again, Compressed Air Magazine states that official institutions and monetary authorities own the majority. The rest of the gold is in jewelry, thirty percent and 11 percent held by private parties.

While researching the Gold Rush 1849 I  read that keeping records of the gold was nonexistent for several years. So much of these numbers are just educated guesses. Oh, well at least we have a vague idea. 

I wonder if the gold wedding ring on my finger has been counted? Think I should tell them?

GOLD FROM LEAD? YES, YES, YES,

^{GOLD HAS BEEN MADE FROM LEAD!}

^In 1980 the late chemist Glen T Seaborg turned atoms of bismuth, a type of lead, into gold. This happened at the Lawrence Berkeley,  Laboratory, Calif. Using nuclear physics he blasted the iron with ions of carbon and neon, which left gold.

Here’s the catch and the reason that gold is not being produced by the barrels. IT COSTS TOO MUCH! $10,000 (US) was needed for operating expenses to produce one billionth of a cent worth of gold.

Did the Area of Sutter's Mill Look Like This Old Photo?

The Start of the '49er Gold Rush

     The gold nugget above is the exact size of one of several that James W. Marshall found at Sutter's Mill that began the California Gold Rush. He found it in 1848. It took awhile for the news to travel east that gold was to be had with little effort. It wasn't long before a stream of gold prospectors lined the banks of several California rivers.

Those that got richest from the discovery were the ones that lived nearby or arrived in the area in 1848. It could take by ship as long as a year to get from New York to California.  (One ship that took a year was "the little steam packet Hartford.")

Interesting Fact

According to the book above and several books consulted for information for this site Rob and Allan most likely would not have been '49ers. Most men were much younger than these two (late forties). Although there were some that lived in the area and some made the trip from the east that were as old and older than Rob and Allan, but most found the work much too hard. If they stayed in the area, they found work other than prospecting.

     Let's say you are a California '49er. You managed to make your pile of gold. You're set for life.  Do you keep that rugged beard, or do you shave it off and begin again the routine of shaving every day. No need  to decide until you get within a day of home and family. But rumor has it that those that leave the whiskers are thought of, for a time anyway, as a hero. 

THAT'S GOING TO BE ONE DIFFICULT DECISION TO MAKE, OR IS IT!

We can only guess how excited they were to start their morning's work this way. "What will the rest of the day be like?" They must have been saying.
